A GC is the principal contractor on a construction project. To set the budget and design, the general contractor collaborates with the architect. The general contractor may also be called a prime contractor. This means that he/she will handle the negotiations for the major parts of the project. This position is critical for the success of any construction project, but it does not necessarily mean the GC should be the only person responsible for the project.
