The Ramayana is one of the two major Hindu epics known as the Itihasas, along with the Mahabharata, that were written in the old language of Sanskrit. The epic, which is typically attributed to the Maharishi Valmiki, tells the story of Rama, a legendary prince of the city of Ayodhya in the Kosala realm. The epic recounts Rama’s fourteen-year exile in the forest, which his father King Dasharatha ordered at Kaikeyi’s request, his travels with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana through Indian forests, the war that ensued after Sita was abducted by Ravana, the king of Lanka, and Rama’s eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amid jubilation and celebration.
